How to type with your voice in 3 steps

  1. Tap Record

    The first time, your browser asks to use the microphone: tap Allow.

  2. Speak, then tap Stop and listen

    Talk at your own pace, with short pauses. Listen back and tap Transcribe.

  3. Copy the text

    In a few seconds it shows up with punctuation. Tap Copy text and paste it into your message, email or document.

The recording time shows on screen while you speak, with the sound level in a bar. It stops by itself at 5 minutes.

On your phone

  • Android: use Chrome. On the first recording, Chrome asks whether the site can use the microphone; tap Allow (or While using the site). Hold the phone about a hand’s width from your mouth.
  • iPhone: use Safari. It asks for the microphone the first time you tap Record. Keep the screen on and Safari open while recording: if the screen locks or you switch apps, recording stops, and what was already recorded stays for you to listen to and send.
  • Opened inside another app: the browser inside Instagram, Facebook and other apps may not record. Tap the three dots, then Open in browser.

To write a WhatsApp message by voice, record here, copy the text and paste it into the chat. If the voice message was already sent on WhatsApp, use the WhatsApp audio page.

On a computer

It works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on a Mac, with the laptop microphone, a webcam with a microphone or a headset. The first time, click Allow on the browser prompt near the address bar.

If the microphone is blocked, click the icon next to the site address, allow the Microphone and click Record again. If your computer has more than one microphone, pick the right one in the system sound settings.

Punctuation: no need to dictate it

Commas, periods and question marks are added from the way you speak:

  • pause briefly at the end of each sentence: the pause becomes a period;
  • a question said as a question gets a question mark;
  • don’t say “comma” or “period”: the word may show up written in the text;
  • the text comes out as one paragraph; to split topics, record one at a time.

Names of people, brands and acronyms may come out misspelled. Check those parts before you send.

Tips for fewer mistakes

  • Speak close to the microphone, somewhere quiet: no TV, fan or street noise behind you.
  • Speak at a normal pace. Rushing or speaking too softly adds mistakes.
  • If the sound level bar doesn’t move, the browser is listening to another microphone or the microphone is muted.
  • Before recording, check the language under Change: English is the default on this page.

The guide why is my transcript wrong explains each cause and how to avoid it.

Live dictation or record and transcribe

Your phone keyboard has a microphone that writes while you speak, good for short sentences. Here it’s different: you record the whole thing, listen before sending and get punctuated text at once, with Copy text and the TXT, VTT and SRT subtitle files. It suits long messages, ideas, drafts and anyone who’d rather talk than type.

To caption a video from your voice, use the SRT subtitle generator. For other audio, the home page audio to text takes a ready file.

Limit and privacy

Each recording can be up to 5 minutes and uses 1 of 4 free transcripts every 15 minutes. Recordings under 1 second, audio with no speech and failed attempts don’t count.

The recording stays only in your device’s memory until you tap Transcribe. Then it goes to our server and is deleted as soon as the transcript is ready; the text goes only to your device. Nothing is kept in cache, backups or logs. Details in the privacy policy.

Frequently asked questions

Is voice typing free?

It’s free and needs no sign-up. Each recording uses 1 of 4 transcripts every 15 minutes, the same count as uploaded audio. The site is supported by ads.

Does the text appear while I speak?

No. You record, listen if you like and tap Transcribe. The text arrives in a few seconds: a 1-minute recording is usually ready in under 30 seconds. In return, it comes with punctuation and the whole speech at once.

How long can I record?

Up to 5 minutes per recording. The time shows on screen while you speak, and recording stops by itself at the limit. For longer text, record in parts and put them together.

Do I have to say comma and period?

No. Punctuation is added from the way you speak. If you say the word comma, it may show up written in the text. Pause briefly at the end of each sentence.

My browser won't let me use the microphone. What now?

The microphone is blocked for this site. In Chrome, tap the icon next to the address and allow the Microphone. In Safari on iPhone, tap the icon to the left of the address, then Website Settings, and choose Allow for Microphone. Then tap Record again.

Does it work on iPhone?

Yes, in Safari on current iOS versions. Keep the screen on while recording: if it locks or you switch apps, recording stops, and what was already recorded stays for you to listen to and send.

I opened it from a link in Instagram and Record doesn't work.

The browser inside some apps can’t record audio. Tap the three dots, then Open in browser, and record in Chrome or Safari.

Can I dictate in Portuguese or Spanish?

Yes. Before recording, tap Change and pick the language, or Detect. If the text comes out in the wrong language, Other language redoes it with the same recording, and the first switch of the day is free.

Is my recording stored?

No. It stays only on your device until you tap Transcribe. On our server, the audio is deleted as soon as the transcript is ready, and the text goes only to your device.

I already have the audio recorded. Do I need to record again?

No. Tap Choose audio and upload the file. For phone recordings and short meetings, see voice recording to text.
