How to transcribe a WhatsApp voice message in 3 steps

  1. Get the voice message out of WhatsApp

On Android, through Share. On iPhone, with Save to Files. On a computer, with Download in WhatsApp Web.

  2. Tap Choose audio

Or, on Android with the site installed, pick PegaFala in the Share menu: the transcript starts on its own.

  3. Copy the text

Use Copy text and paste it anywhere. You can also download TXT, SRT or VTT.

The exact path depends on your device. The sections below cover each one.

On Android: use the Share menu

With the site installed as an app from Chrome, PegaFala shows up in WhatsApp’s Share menu:

  1. In Chrome, open pegafala.com.br, tap the three dots and Install app (or Add to Home screen).
  2. In WhatsApp, press and hold the voice message, tap the three dots at the top and Share.
  3. Pick PegaFala. The app opens with the audio loaded, and the transcript starts on its own.

The shortcut only works with the site installed from Chrome. Without it, share the voice message to the Files app or to Drive, then tap Choose audio: the WhatsApp audio folder is hidden on current Android versions, so the file picker can’t see it. Step by step in the Android guide.

On iPhone: save it to Files first

iPhones don’t show websites in the Share menu, so you save the message and pick it here:

  1. In WhatsApp, press and hold the voice message and tap Forward.
  2. Tap the share icon at the bottom and Save to Files.
  3. Here, tap Choose audio, then Choose File, and find the message where you saved it.

The file is an .opus. It opens here on any iPhone, even where the iPhone itself won’t play that format. Details in the iPhone guide.

On a computer: WhatsApp Web or Desktop

WhatsApp doesn’t transcribe voice messages on a computer, and this is where the site helps most:

  1. In WhatsApp Web, hover over the voice message and open the arrow in the corner.
  2. Choose Download. The file is an .ogg in your Downloads folder.
  3. Drop it on the card above, or use Choose audio.

In the WhatsApp desktop app, use the same arrow and Save as. How to export a WhatsApp voice message covers both.

What about WhatsApp’s own transcripts?

WhatsApp transcribes voice messages on the phone, for some languages and devices. To read a quick message, that’s enough. The site helps when you need the full text to copy, want it on a computer, need a TXT or SRT file, or don’t have the feature. WhatsApp’s own transcripts explains how to turn it on and when it falls short.

Long or several voice messages

Each voice message up to 5 minutes comes out in full. Longer ones get a first-minute preview, and the screen warns you before uploading. Several messages from one chat go one at a time: each uses 1 of 4 transcripts every 15 minutes. To keep only what matters, see how to trim and shrink an audio file. For your own recordings, the voice recording page has tips for a cleaner transcript. For a video someone sent you on WhatsApp, use video to text.

Privacy

The audio is deleted as soon as the transcript is ready, and the text goes only to your device. Transcription runs on our own server; only when the queue is full can a backup service receive the converted audio, never your IP. Keep the text for yourself and don’t publish someone else’s conversation without permission. More in the privacy policy.

Frequently asked questions

Can I transcribe a WhatsApp voice message without installing anything?

Yes. On iPhone and on a computer you save the message and pick it here. On Android, installing the site from Chrome is only for the Share shortcut; without it, save the message to Files or Drive and pick it here.

On iPhone, where is the voice message after I save it?

In the Files app, in the folder you picked when saving (On My iPhone or iCloud Drive). Here, tap Choose audio, then Choose File to get to it.

Why doesn't PegaFala show up in the iPhone Share menu?

iPhones don’t let websites appear in the Share menu, not even ones added to the Home Screen. That’s why the iPhone path goes through Files. The iPhone guide shows every tap.

On Android, how does the site show up in the Share menu?

Install it as an app from Chrome (three-dot menu, Install app). Then, in WhatsApp, press and hold the voice message, tap the three dots and Share. The Android guide covers what to do if it doesn’t appear.

Doesn't WhatsApp already transcribe voice messages?

It does, on the phone, for some languages and devices. Here you get the full text to take anywhere, on a computer too, plus SRT and TXT files. See WhatsApp’s own transcripts.

Does it work with forwarded voice messages?

Yes. To the site, a forwarded voice message is an OPUS file like any other.

Does it work with WhatsApp Business?

Yes. Saving or sharing a voice message works the same way as in regular WhatsApp.

How long can a voice message be?

Up to 5 minutes comes out in full. Longer ones get the first minute as a preview. The file size limit is 25 MB, which a WhatsApp voice message almost never reaches.

Can I transcribe a view-once voice message?

No. WhatsApp doesn’t let you save, forward or share that kind of message, so it can’t reach this site.

Do you keep the conversation?

No. The audio is deleted as soon as the transcript is ready, and the text goes only to your device.
