How to transcribe a video in 3 steps
Choose the video
Tap Choose audio and pick the MP4 or MOV. On iPhone, it’s under Photo Library or Choose File.
Wait for the upload and the text
The screen shows the upload percentage, then the transcript. Keep the screen open.
Copy or download
Use Copy text or download the SRT subtitles, with a time for each line.
Video is heavier than audio. On mobile data, a 20 MB video can take a few minutes to upload: Wi-Fi is better.
Only the sound is used
The server pulls the sound out of the video, converts it to a light audio file and deletes the video right away. The picture is never looked at or stored. So:
- burned-in captions and on-screen text don’t show up in the transcript;
- a video with no sound is turned down without using your limit;
- loud music over the speech means more errors.
Size and length
| Rule | Limit |
|---|---|
| File size | up to 25 MB |
| Length that comes out in full | up to 5 minutes |
| Longer videos | first minute, as a preview |
| Use per connection (IP) | 4 transcripts every 15 minutes |
Phone video in HD takes 50 to 100 MB per minute. To fit, record at a lower resolution, use the “smaller size” option when sharing, or send only the part with the speech.
Instagram or TikTok videos
If the video is public on Instagram or TikTok, there’s nothing to download: paste the link in video link to text. This page is for videos on your device: your own recording, a video someone sent you, a recorded class.
What to do with the text
- Subtitles: download the SRT and import it into CapCut or another editor. See the SRT subtitle generator.
- Notes and scripts: copy the text and organize it.
- Archive: keep the TXT next to the video so you can search it later.
Privacy
The video is deleted as soon as the sound is pulled out, and the sound is deleted when the transcript is ready. The text goes only to your device. Upload videos that are yours or that you have the right to use. More in the privacy policy.
Frequently asked questions
Which videos work?
MP4 and MOV, the phone formats, plus WebM and MKV. The video needs sound: silent videos are turned down without using your limit.
Is the whole video uploaded?
The whole file goes to our server, which keeps only the sound and deletes the video right away. That’s why the 25 MB limit matters more for video than for audio.
My video is over 25 MB. What can I do?
HD video goes over 25 MB in a few minutes. Send a smaller version or just the part with the speech. See how to trim and shrink an audio file.
What about Instagram or TikTok videos?
For public videos there, no download needed: paste the link in video link to text.
Does it work with YouTube videos?
No. YouTube links and videos are out of scope.
Does it pick up text written on the screen?
No. Only speech goes in. Burned-in captions and on-screen text are left out.
What about a video with only music?
If the song has lyrics, you may get them, with errors. With no speech, the screen tells you, and the attempt doesn’t count toward your limit.
Can I use the text as subtitles?
Yes. Download the SRT subtitles and import them into your editor. The SRT subtitle generator page explains how.
