Voice recording to text

Phone recordings, interviews and short meetings: up to 5 min come out in full, and longer ones get the first minute.

OPUS, M4A, MP3, WAV or MP4 · up to 25 MB

Audio language:English

Up to 5 min per file. Uses 1 of 4 free transcripts every 15 min. Audio with no speech and failed attempts don’t count.

Free, no sign-up. Your audio is deleted as soon as the transcript is ready.

How to transcribe a recording in 3 steps

  1. Choose the recording

Tap Choose audio and find the recorder’s file. On a computer, drop it on the card.

  2. Wait for the text

The upload starts on its own. A 2-minute recording takes about a minute.

  3. Copy or download

Use Copy text, or grab the SRT subtitles and the TXT and VTT under Other formats.

If the recording is longer than 5 minutes, the screen warns you before uploading and offers the first minute as a preview.

On iPhone: Voice Memos

Voice Memos saves each recording as M4A. To bring it here:

  1. In Voice Memos, tap the recording, then the three dots and Save to Files (or Share and Save to Files).
  2. Here, tap Choose audio and Choose File, and pick the recording.

On some iPhones, recordings show up directly under Browse, without saving first.

On Android: your phone’s recorder

Each brand has its own recorder:

  • Samsung: recordings are in the Recordings or Voice Recorder folder, as M4A.
  • Motorola, Xiaomi and Pixel: the recorder saves to Recordings, as M4A or MP3.

Tap Choose audio, open the files app and look for those folders. If you can’t find it, open the recorder, tap Share on the recording and save it to Drive or Downloads. WhatsApp voice messages take another path: see WhatsApp audio to text.

Long recordings

The free plan transcribes up to 5 minutes per file. Longer files get the first minute, so you can check the quality. For the rest, trim the part that matters: Voice Memos can trim, and most Android recorders have a simple editor. See how to trim and shrink an audio file.

Interviews and meetings

The text comes out as one block, without speaker labels. To make it easier to read:

  • put the phone in the middle of the table, near whoever speaks quietly;
  • ask people to speak one at a time;
  • add names afterwards, listening again.

If the recording is going to become video subtitles, use the SRT subtitle generator.

How to record for a better transcript

  • Keep the mic about a hand’s length from the speaker’s mouth.
  • Pick a quiet place: no fan, TV or street noise.
  • Put the phone on silent so notifications don’t cut in.
  • Speak at a normal pace: sped-up audio has more errors.

Why is my transcript wrong explains each cause.

The file is deleted as soon as the transcript is ready, and the text goes only to your device. Let people know before you record, and ask before publishing what they said. More in the privacy policy.

Frequently asked questions

Which formats do voice recorders use?

iPhone recordings are M4A. Android recorders usually save M4A or MP3, and some older ones AMR. They all work here, up to 25 MB.

Doesn't the iPhone recording app transcribe already?

On some models and languages, it shows a transcript inside the app. Here you get the text to copy plus SRT, VTT and TXT files, on any device.

How long does it take?

About half the length of the audio: a 2-minute recording is ready in about a minute. At peak times there may be a short line, and the screen shows your turn.

Does it tell speakers apart?

Not yet. The text comes out as one block with punctuation. For an interview, you can mark who said what afterwards.

Do recorded phone calls work?

Yes, if the file is yours and you have the right to use it. The other side of a call is often quiet, so that part may have gaps.

Can I send several recordings in a row?

Yes, one at a time. Each uses 1 of 4 transcripts every 15 minutes.

My meeting is 40 minutes long. Now what?

The free plan transcribes up to 5 minutes per file; longer files get the first minute. Trim the parts that matter into pieces of up to 5 minutes and send them one by one. See how to trim and shrink an audio file.

Is the file stored?

No. It’s deleted as soon as the transcript is ready, and the text goes only to your device.
