How to export a WhatsApp voice message (phone and computer)

Updated on October 25, 2026

To transcribe, keep or move a WhatsApp voice message, you need it as a file. WhatsApp allows that on every device, each with its own path. Once you have the file, pick it on the WhatsApp audio to text page.

On WhatsApp Web

  1. Open the chat at web.whatsapp.com.
  2. Hover over the voice message and click the arrow in the corner.
  3. Click Download.

The file lands in Downloads as an .ogg. On the site, drop it on the card or use Choose audio. This is where the site helps most: WhatsApp doesn’t transcribe voice messages on a computer.

In the WhatsApp desktop app

  1. Open the chat in the Windows or Mac app.
  2. Hover over the message and open the arrow in the corner.
  3. Choose Save as and a folder.

If the arrow doesn’t appear, right-click the message: the same options show up.

On Android

The folder where WhatsApp keeps voice messages is hidden on current Android versions. The simple way is to share the message somewhere visible:

  1. Press and hold the voice message until it’s selected.
  2. Tap the three dots and Share.
  3. Pick Files (or Save to Drive) and a folder like Downloads.

With the site installed as an app, you can pick PegaFala straight from Share. The Android guide shows that shortcut.

On iPhone

  1. Press and hold the voice message and tap Forward.
  2. Tap the share icon at the bottom.
  3. Tap Save to Files and pick a folder.

The file ends in .opus. Details in the iPhone guide.

OPUS and OGG

WhatsApp voice messages use the Opus codec inside an Ogg file. On phones the extension is usually .opus; on WhatsApp Web, .ogg. Same audio, very light: a minute takes about 150 KB. VLC and current browsers play both, and the site accepts both without converting.

What you can’t export

  • View-once messages: WhatsApp blocks saving, forwarding and sharing.
  • Messages deleted for everyone: they’re gone from the recipient’s phone.
  • Voice calls: WhatsApp doesn’t record calls.

Other people’s conversations

A voice message someone sent you is a private conversation. Exporting it to keep or transcribe for yourself is one thing; publishing someone else’s words without permission is another. On the site, the audio is deleted as soon as the transcript is ready, and the text stays only on your device.
